Appreciating Your Mother

Gainesville Daily Register, May 9, 1948

In a touching tribute from 1948, the Register’s A. Morton Smith wrote “Mother’s Day, it seems to us, is a special occasion that brings about the greatest unanimity of feeling among Americans- a tenderness in their hearts when they think of one who lives or has passed on.” Mother’s Day has been a special one for Americans especially since 1907. The holiday was made by a woman named Anna Jarvis, who organized a special church service to honor her late mother. The occasion quickly spread and was made a national holiday by Woodrow Wilson in 1914.

A. Morton Smith went on to say that mothers are the guiding light, thoughtful teachers, and patient servants of the family. Mothers on this day more than anything wish to see the fruits of their labors- that their families are thriving and feel loved by all the hard work that moms put in. For those with mothers who have passed, we hope that the day brings loving, tender memories and that the love your mother gave to you gets passed on to the people in your life.

So don’t forget that Mother’s Day is this Sunday, and take extra care of the special women in your life that raised and supported you.
